Help decide where Ohio Magazine should eat out in Columbus

Posted July 22, 2009
By Irene Alvarez, Marketing Project Manager

Got an opinion on the best place to eat in Columbus? We’d love to hear it.

We’re working with Ohio Magazine on a story they’re planning about places to dine. Sure, we could just give them our favorites, but we’re more interested in yours. So, we have a question for those of you who live here:

What’s your favorite place to take visiting friends and family out to eat in Columbus? Why?

There are two ways to share your thoughts:

1. Comment on this blog post.

2. Tweet your recommendation to @ExpCols , and be sure to include #OHMag in your tweet.

We’ll see what suggestions rise to the top in popularity, and an Ohio Magazine writer will head to at least one of the restaurants suggested. Your quoted suggestion might appear in the article, too.

Look for the article in the October issue of Ohio Magazine. In the meantime, you’ll find any additional updates here or on the @ExpCols Twitter profile.

My wife and I have tried several fine dining establishments in the area since we moved hear in 2007, but the most consistently high quality of both food and service can definitely be found at G. Michael’s. The food is amazing, and the portions are not skimpy, either. We’ve yet to have better service, well, anywhere.

  2. Monica Says:

    Jeni’s! Best ice cream ever.

  3. Vicky Branson Says:

Love Starliner Diner for dinner or weekend brunches! Great Cuban, Cajun and everynight specials. Friendly service and relaxed atmosphere.

  4. Sara Says:

Cuco’s for some of the best Mexican in town, they also serve Mexican breakfast items!

Very tasty, local and affordable - The Chiles Rellenos is one of the best and more authentic I’ve had.

We just had a long discussion about this at work. The top places:

A great Breakfast place is Jack and Benny’s diner on N. High St. (Just north of THE OSU Campus). A little hole-in-the-wall place that’s been there for years. Great atmosphere and good food. Not terribly expensive either. There is usually a wait on the weekends but worth it.

    Cap City
    Barcelona in German Village
The Top on East Main Street
Prime rib - The Clairmont on South High Street
    Tip Top on Gay St.

So many to choose from. So hungry for lunch now!

Just posted to the Restaurant Widow about this.

My favorite breakfasts are Northstar and Sage. Northstar also has the tastiest veggie burger I’ve ever consumed that I would order any day over a beef burger. For pizza, Tommy’s– no contest. And, of course, more love for Jeni’s. Outstanding. I love Alana’s for fine dining– it really reflects kind of the quirky, arty Columbus I know and love. Finally, I adore anything Liz Lessner touches– Betty’s, Tip Top, and Surly Girl are all great. Can’t wait to try Franks when I return in the autumn.

  7. Susan M. Says:

We always take visitors to Alana’s. It feels casual, but the food knocks your socks off. It’s what Columbus fine dining should be.

  8. Jen Says:

Northstar is my favorite place to take my visiting friends. They have fantastic unique food and a great atmosphere.

  9. Nicole Kraft Says:

Alana’s is the best restaurant in town.

  10. Jason Says:

For the best burgers in town, there’s no match for the Thurman Burger at The Thurman Cafe in German Village.

  11. Chad Says:

I don’t see it listed, but Rigsbys http://www.rigsbyskitchen.com/ in the short north is a great lunch and dinner option. If you are interested in wines, try twisted vine in grandview http://www.twistedvine.us.com/

  12. Chris Says:

How about the German Village Coffee House for breakfast? And try Plank’s on Parsons and the Village Coney as well.

  13. Kelan Craig Says:

I’m a big fan of Betty’s Fine Food & Spirits, the Surly Girl Saloon, Tip Top Restaurant and Dirty Frank’s Hot Dog Palace. Each has a different and original theme that contributes to a great atmosphere, good food and of course several quality beers on tap. Each of them are open until 2:00 am. I would try “Betty’s Best Salad,” Tip Top’s pot roast sandwich on pretzel bread, Surly Girl’s Hell Salad and Dirty Frank’s “Whoa Nellie” dog. I don’t even need to share a disclaimer: I don’t work at any of these, but I probably eat at one every other week!

  14. Joseph Says:

    Banana Bean Cafe for brunch

Banana Leaf (Bethel Rd.) for Indian cuisine

  15. tasha Says:

I always order a pizza from Bexley Pizza Plus whenever someone visits from out of town. They never disappoint!! And for dessert, nothing but Graeter’s Ice Cream.

  16. Rebecca Tien Says:

I’m new to town, so I don’t know too many restaurants yet, but I had a really nice meal recently at Basi Italia. The food was simple but fresh, and flavorful and not over-priced and the wine was pretty reasonably priced too. The atmosphere is very cozy and inviting. If this is representative of Columbus restaurants, I think I’m going to like it here!

  17. Krista Says:

    Eddie Merlots at Polaris!
I have to admit that I am not a steak eater, but when I dined at Eddie Merlots I gave it a try. Excellent!

  18. Kristen Says:

I’ll 2nd Betty’s Fine Food & Spirits - wonderful eclectic food and atmosphere - great drafts and drink selection!

You’ll remember the food and the experience!

  19. Karen Green Says:

We eat out a lot! We really enjoy Luce’ in Dublin; Barcelona’s and Lindey’s in German Village for special evenings; Polaris Grill is good too!

  20. Virginia Says:

I agree with everything that has been listed already! I would also have to say that some of my favorites are Tasi Cafe for breakfast, Figlio in Grandview, Bodega, Nida’s Thai on High, Marcella’s, and if you’re looking for somewhere a little hokey to take guests, Schmidt’s Sausage Haus.

  21. Debbie Says:

There are so many wonderful choices in Columbus that it’s hard to narrow it down. A few favorites:
    Giuseppe’s Ritrovo - Bexley
    Z-Cucina - Grandview
    Chi Thai - Gahanna
    Third & Hollywood - Grandview
    Martini’s - Short North
Bonefish Grill - Polaris Parkway & Frantz Rd.
    Bon Vie - Easton
    Ocean Club - Easton

  22. Joel Says:

    My favorites:

    Bodega
    Rossi
    Barcelona
    Lindey’s
    Lemongrass
    Barrio
