Dessert First in Columbus
When you’re on vacation, you tend not to worry too much about being unconventional. Is there really a good reason not to start your meal off with dessert? Or have two desserts? Or just skip the meal altogether and feast on some of the best sweet treats under the sun – right here in Columbus.
We’re known worldwide for our ice cream. Jeni’s Spendid Ice Creams combines all-Ohio grass-fed milk with spices, fruits and even vegetables from all over the world. You can taste everything from lime cardamom to plum sake. It’s not just Columbusites who dig Jeni’s Ice Cream – it’s been named the best ice cream in America time and time again, and founder Jeni Britton Bauer has a James Beard Award under her belt for her ice-cream-only cookbook. You can even make a trip based just on ice cream: Vienna Ice Café, Johnson’s, Graeters and Mardi Gras all offer their own twists on the classic dessert.
Columbus also boast some of the best pastry chefs in the Midwest. Pistacia Vera in German Village offers a wide array of perfectly presented French patisserie (and a darn good custom-blend coffee). It’s a great spot to sneak in a dessert-esque treat a breakfast. Mozart’s Bakery in Clintonville specializes in Austrian-style pastries, and their marzipan peaches are not only tasty, but beautiful. Patisserie Lallier, whose pastries are available at retail establishments throughout the city, specializes in classic French puff-pastry treats and sweets like flavored marshmallows.
If you’ve got dietary restrictions, you’ll still have plenty of options! Cherbourg Bakery in Bexley is 100% gluten-free (if you didn’t know, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference). Pattycake Bakery is 100% vegan – and 100% delicious.
Still hungry? Try the pies from Sassafras Bakery. Or the Bobby-Flay-beating brownies and blondies from Sugardaddy’s Sumptuous Sweeties. Or the brioche at The Angry Baker in Old Town East.
