A Guide to Columbus Bars and Restaurants with Character

This is not a guide for those who only eat on white table cloths. I cannot guarantee that you’ll find a five star restaurant from this post. If you’re looking for a romantic hotspot you’re reading the wrong article.

This is for those of us that like true hole-in-the-wall establishments.

A Guide to Columbus’ Bars and Restaurants With Character

1. In the Arena District
Betty’s Bar
435 West Nationwide Boulevard, Columbus
What to order: Betty’s Burger, homemade potato chips
Why: The owner, Shorty, is a great gal. She’ll greet you as “Sweet pea”, ask you “how’s your grease?” and when you leave tell you “be good or don’t get caught!” Don’t just show up, though, the hours are irregular: check their Facebook page to see when she feels like opening.

2. In the Short North Arts District
Mike’s Grill
724 North High Street, Columbus
What to order: a cold beer
Why: This tiny hole in the wall is home to can beers, a good jam-box, and a pretty cool back-patio.

3. In the University District
Too’s
1880 North High Street, Columbus
What to order: a Tsunami Shot (you might get wet).
Why: Too’s is a hangout for college students; it’s in a dingy basement with high-energy music and great drinks.

4. In Old Beechwold
Bob’s Bar
4961 North High Street, Columbus
What to order: a craft beer
Why: this place has a very good beer selection, darts and a pool table. When it comes to neighborhood bars this place is the tops.

5. In Grandview Heights
Meister’s Bar
1168 Chambers Road, Columbus
What to order: pizza
Why: This bar is tucked in an out-of-the way neighborhood. There are pool tables, a really good jam-box, and a great crowd. Meister’s is a good choice for a fun night out with friends in a relaxed atmosphere.
