Columbus Food Scene: Rockmill Brewery

In honor of the 79th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition, we’re taking a quick break from our holiday ideas series and bringing you a great video about BEER!

If you’re a beer lover and haven’t heard of Rockmill Brewery yet – where have you been? Set on an idyllic horse farm, just a few minutes southeast of downtown Columbus in Lancaster, Rockmill extraordinary beers have been gracing the pages of national food blogs and magazines. There’s just something different and wonderful about them.

Brewer Matthew Barbee credits the qualities of the sandstone-filtered water at the brewery for his beer’s complex flavors. The chemical profile closely matches the water of Wallonia, Belgium – exactly where the Saisons, Dubbels and Witbeers he crafts originated. But there’s something to be said for Barbee’s devotion to perfection. These beers are just great. They’re so far from mass-produced beers that it’s hard to even put them in the same category.

Another factor that sets Rockmill apart is collaboration. The Columbus Food Scene is full of awesome collaborations among quality businesses, but Rockmill goes the extra mile. Rockmill has teamed up with such local companies as Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams and Middle West Spirits, and also host beer pairing dinners at restaurants all over the city. Check their web site for more info.

Have you tried Rockmill’s beers yet? What’s your favorite?

That’s hot! The dubbel is special. I would say they do, appropriately, Belgian-American brew given the high hop profile. Good stuff.
