A Pop Up Lobster ShackPreview for An Upcoming Restaurant

If you the Columbus food scene like I do, then you have to check out the “Happy Happy Lobster Shack” pop-up restaurant inside Double Happiness bar in the Brewery District. The brainchild of Chef Erik Till and Lisa Edge, owners of Commonwealth and the soon to open White Rabbit restaurants, the lobster shack is only open for two more weeks, closing its doors after Friday, August 23.

Lobster Shack 2The menu features New England-style lobster rolls, served cold on top of grilled & buttered split buns, soft shell crabs and the best fried shrimp I’ve ever had. Each basket comes with one pound of fresh cut fries and house made creamy slaw.

And Double Happiness is featuring specials of Athens-based Jackie O’s Brewery beer buckets (4 cans) as well as OYO Stone Fruit Cape Cod cocktails to pair with the fresh seafood.

I couldn’t settle on just one item so I had to order the seafood platter which comes with a lobster roll, soft shell crabs, fried shrimp, fries and slaw. It serves 2-3 people or one very hungry person…hey no one is judging.

I washed it down with Jackie O’s Firefly Ale, a very light amber ale that was perfect with the saltiness of the fried shrimp and french fries. What I liked most about the shrimp was that Chef Till did it the right way, simply frying it in corn starch and then after pulling it out of the fryer dashing it with a proprietary blend of seasonings.

Most people would want to add the seasoning to the cornstarch or flower and coat the shrimp in it before frying, but when you do that, you end up killing the flavor of the seasoning and also prevent the natural sweetness of the shrimp to come out.

Happy Happy Lobster Shack may be a pop-up restaurant, but I for one hope it pops up again as I could eat there year round. With only two weeks left, I hope you get a chance to try it for yourself.

Lobster Roll – $16
Fresh lobster meat, New England style served cold on top of a grilled and buttered split bun.

Basked of Fried Shrimp – $12
Served with 1lb. of fresh cut fries and creamy slaw.

Fried Soft Shell Crab – $13
Served with 1lb. of fresh cut fries and creamy slaw.

Seafood Platter (serves 2-3) – $35
Soft shell crab, lobster roll & fried shrimp.
Served with 1lb. of fresh cut fries and creamy slaw.
