This post is written by Amy Taylor, chief operating officer, Columbus Downtown Development Corporation and Capitol South. This is the group responsible for all of the construction and much of the programming for Columbus Commons.

Columbus Commons is the right thing at the right place at the right time.

carousel at Columbus Commons

Maybe you already knew that. Passers-by have been largely unsuccessful at just passing by the park: the pathways and burgeoning gardens demand attention and exploration. Located in the heart of Downtown at High and Rich streets, Columbus Commons has already become a hub for downtown activity.

All this buzz, even before the official Grand Opening beginning Thursday, May 26 at 4 p.m.

The official debut of the park isn’t just an event, it’s an extended outdoor open house with enough room for the entire community to join in celebration. The best news is that everything is free, from the concerts, to the outdoor theater, to the inflatables and face painters.

We’ll Rock The Commons on Thursday with four local headlining acts. And Roll into the weekend with a mixture of activities ranging from bounce-houses and carousel rides to Blues and Brews.

Back to the Garden

Rock, Roll . . . then Relax on Sunday with a laid-back garden party followed by Lounge on the Lawn with the Downtown Residents’ Association of Columbus and a special production of "Back to The Garden" by Shadowbox Live.

When the weekend ends, we’ll just be warming up. Come back to the Columbus Commons for fitness classes, farmers’ markets, garden clubs, children’s events and concerts all summer long.

Visit www.columbuscommons.org for all of the details on the opening and daily activities.

Ballet Met's The Nutcracker

Ballet Met’s The Nutcracker

This post is part three in a four part series about the holiday season in Columbus. Check out part one here , about craft shows and shopping fairs, or part two here , about holiday light displays. And stay tuned for part four later this week, where we’ll share what’s happening for the holidays at some of Columbus’ favorite attractions.

There’s something about the holiday season that makes me want to get dressed up and go out. Luckily December has no shortage of holiday-themed performances that fit the bill, including theater, music and performing arts. Since many are annual events, you have the opportunity to revisit an old favorite, begin a new tradition, or do both (it is the holidays, after all). But, don’t take too long to decide — some of these won’t be around long: (more…)

Things to do for New Year’s Eve in Columbus

Thursday, December 17th, 2009
Columbus

If you are anything like me, you are just now realizing Christmas is only a week away and you haven’t had time to think about New Years Eve yet.

So, I did a little homework and found some fun things to do for all types of groups looking to celebrate.

Family Friendly
This year marks the 15th Annual First Night Columbus . The event begins at 4 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m.; admission is $8 in advance and $10 the day of. Celebrate community spirit, rich cultural heritage and the arts in a substance-free, family-friendly environment. Always a sure bet for a good time for both young and old is Magic Mountain Fun Center’s New Year’s Eve Party , held at both the Reynoldsburg and Polaris locations from 6 p.m.-1 a.m. Admission is $19.95 and gets you a buffet, unlimited video game play, a hat and noisemaker, prize filled balloon drops, two performing acts, family friendly challenge games and a coloring contest for the littlest party goers. Give the gift of a Columbus experience

The Nutcracker

With Thanksgiving come and gone, the holiday shopping list is now on a lot of minds. But before you hit the mall, consider getting a little more inventive.

Why not give your friends and family members an experience you can enjoy together? Who knows, you might even start a new holiday tradition.

Last Christmas, my boyfriend and I took our moms to see the musical Grease at the Palace Theatre. The day was such a hit that we’re continuing the trend this year. We tossed around several possible places to take them, including Wildlights at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium , Shadowbox: Holiday Hoopla and the Short North Holiday Hop , which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this weekend.

In the end, we decided on a true holiday classic: The Nutcracker , which BalletMet will perform at the Ohio Theatre. Prices start at $29 and performances run December 11-23, so even the busiest holiday schedule can be accommodated. But don’t wait too long to buy tickets, because they go fast - you can get them online here .

I can’t think of a more perfect excuse to get dressed up, enjoy a night out and truly get into the holiday spirit.

“Something that’s gaudy, something that’s bawdy” has arrived at Shadowbox

Forum at Shadowbox

The Sketch Comedy and Rock-n-Roll Club

Our friends at Shadowbox have done it again.

They’ve produced a remarkable production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum , the Tony Award winning musical by Stephen Sondheim.

Every time I attend a Shadowbox performance I’m struck by how fortunate we are to have such talent in our own backyard. This show has it all: great comedic acting, perfectly executed dialog, and wonderfully choreographed music, singing and dancing. The result is non-stop, goofy, hilarious entertainment. Throughout both acts, I was either laughing hysterically or smiling ear-to-ear.

Steve Guyer (Executive Producer/Director) and Julie Klein (Assistant Director) have done a masterful production job. The entire cast shines, but special acknowledgment goes to J.T. Walker for his performance as Pseudolus and Jimmy Mak as Hysterium. They were totally in synch throughout the show’s entirety.

My favorite thing about a Shadowbox experience is that the actors are also your servers. Amy Lay , who plays the amusing dumb-blonde Philia, was our server Sunday. Being able to interact with the actors during intermission, before and after the show creates a powerful intimacy. I had to ask Amy, “How did you cross your eyes like that?”

I can’t wait to see Forum again. You can check it out on Sundays only, at 2:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. through April 26.
