Substance Loft Celebrates Local Designers

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

This post is written by Beth Ervin, Communications Director for Experience Columbus.

I think of the Short North as my preferred shopping mall, and Substance (783 N. High St.) has been my favorite store there for years. Many of the beautiful clothes and accessories owner Christina Getachew stocks are organic, fair trade, re-purposed or vegan friendly. They’re also beautiful … and contemporary, yet timeless enough that I know I can wear what I purchase for years.

A year ago, something happened to make me love Substance even more. Christina opened up her second floor space to local artists, supporting entrepreneurs and introducing customers like me to exciting locally designed and produced fashion and products. Loft tenants include: Elizabeth Stevenson, owner of Elizabeth Ashleigh Designs, known for the gorgeous quality of her up-cycled vintage pieces; C & E Designs, a team of collectors who offer a varied array of refurbished vintage jewelry; J Squared Organics , whose soaps made #6 on Columbus Underground’s Best of 2011 Top 10 Locally Made Products list; and Josie Wills, whose background in pageant gown design brings a flair for the formal to her original pieces.

Substance

Substance Lofts will be celebrating its one-year anniversary on Saturday, Feb. 4, 4 – 6 p.m. All of the artists will be present to meet and greet visitors, along with guest artist Linda P. Miller with some of her jewelry designs featuring, hand-forged and imprinted mixed metals, charms, natural gemstones, crystals, and leather.

If you’ve never been to Substance, this would be an ideal time to check it out. If you have, you don’t need an excuse to go – you know it will be fun.

Where to Find Fashion in Columbus

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

This post is written by fashion blogger Kholá Waddy-Jones of Kholá’s Kloset.

So you’re visiting the Capital City. You’ve been to all the ‘must see’ areas and now its time for some retail therapy. But where to go? Well, you’ve come to the right place! Here are my top 5 retail treasures in Columbus:

Jinny - (844 N High St., Columbus) This high end boutique has been featured in Lucky and Marie Claire magazines and resides in the ever so chic Short North district. If you want to get your hands on the newest Proenza Schouler PS1 bag, this is the place. Jinny carries the brands all ‘true’ fashionistas know and love- Givenchy, Lanvin, Maison Martin Margiela, The Row, Rick Owens and Alexander Wang to name a few.

Jinny - Jodi Miller

Milk Bar – (765-A North High St., Columbus) Men’s, Women’s and accessories boutique also located in the Short North, Milk Bar is your go to for lesser known but still fabulous brands such as A.P.C, Life/After/Denim and Cheap Monday. The place to get great style and the peace of mind that you won’t be seeing your finds on everyone else.

Milk Bar Boutique - Jodi Miller

Curiosity Shop – (3387 N High St., Columbus) The ‘Be All, End All’ for vintage jewelry. This Clintonville area shop carries over 15,000, yes THOUSAND pieces of costume jewelry for the late 1800’s to the 1980’s. It also has a small selection of fine jewelry. Find vintage pieces from names such as Miriam Haskell, Dior, Weiss, Trifari and more.

Curiosity Shop - Lorrie Cecil

Captain Betty’s – (4 North Sandusky St., Delaware) In keeping with vintage, make the trip a bit outside the city, up 71 North to Delaware to visit Captain Betty’s. The most pristine vintage clothing in the state, arguably the Midwest, Captain Betty’s houses vintage clothing and accessories for men and women. The selection includes dresses, suits, furs, hats, scarves, jewelry and custom pieces you can’t find anywhere else.

Eclectiques Antique Mall – (3265 North High Street, Columbus) Making your way back to the city, be sure to stop by this unique antique mall. You’ll feel like you’ve just stepped into an episode of ‘American Pickers.’ With over 8,000 sq feet of browsing space, prepare to spend a few hours. Find everything from home decor, clothing, vinyl, jewelry and anything in between.

Top Three Tuesday: Brunch Beverages

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

Brunch is pretty much the perfect way to start a lazy Sunday. Whether you’re an in-towner or visiting Columbus, you’ve got to take the time to slow down your pace and enjoy the simple things in life. While I’m not really a breakfast food guy, I love brunch, because I can get a sandwich or soup while my co-diners can order omelets and waffles. The added bonus of brunch: it’s a socially acceptable way to have a cocktail before noon. Here are my three favorite brunch beverages in Columbus:

Due Amici – Bloody Marys
How awesome is this: You walk into this upscale, loungy spot for brunch, find a plush booth and while you’re waiting for your dining companions to arrive, a server wheels over a cart with all the fixings to make your perfect, customized bloody mary! Order an extra spicy (Tabasco, pepperoncini and pickle spear) for an added kick to your meal, or steer to classic (celery stalk.) Life is good. If you’re not a fan of tomato juice, Due Amici also serves mimosas and peach bellinis at brunch – thought I’ve never known anyone to pass up the bloody mary cart.

The Jury Room – The Nina West
Reopening earlier this year, the Jury Room has put a new spin on Columbus’ oldest restaurant. Serving hearty brunch staples with a twist, there is also a nice bar menu, to indulge a little more. One of the most fanciful drinks, (available for lunch and dinner, too) is the Nina West, named for Columbus’ premiere drag queen, comes complete with pop rocks and a candy cigarette. Fanciful, tasty, a bit tacky – perfect for a fun brunch.

Northstar Café – Shooting Star
OK, this one is perfect for teetotalers, and it also leaves you feeling like you’ve got the energy to conquer the world on your day off. Northstar Café, with locations in the Short North, Clintonville and at Easton, is a brunch mainstay in Columbus. While there are some boozy drink options, I always steer to the Shooting Star – and invigorating, organic blend of orange juice, carrot juice, lemon and ginger. And let’s be honest, I also grab a mug for a never-ending cup of eye-opening, mild coffee.

What would you add to the list?

Top 3 Tuesday: Boutiques in the Short North

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

This post is written by, Erika Dellatorre, blogger at www.thefashionface.com and fashion editor for (614) Magazine .

Brigade
This Short North staple is the perfect place to pick up wardrobe essentials. However, don’t be fooled, as the “basics” sold here lack no sense of style. Denim, chinos, oxfords and casual dresses by cutting edge designers are just some of the items you can find at this clothier. With no shortage of shoes, handbags and accessories for both men and women, Brigade is a one stop shop to score a head to toe look.

Jinny
If it’s sophistication and elegance you crave, than look no further than Jinny. Boutique owner Jin Fillinger brings high fashion to High Street, hand selecting designs from the runways of fashion’s most famous like 3.1 Phillip Lim, Alexander Wang and Rick Owens. Whether you seek a casual-chic look or full on glamour, Jinny has you covered with the shoes, accessories and handbag to match.

Rowe
For the chic, “girl about town” Rowe is an urban oasis providing trendy designer duds for each season. Versatility and effortless glamour are just a few words that call to mind regarding Rowe’s ever-evolving stock. Did I mention it’s also a Mecca for accessories? If eclectic, personal style is your M.O., Rowe has an inventory which rivals that of a New York City boutique.

Rick Nash of the Columbus Blue Jackets

The Columbus Blue Jackets draw fans from all over the state of Ohio, the region and Canada. This post is for all of you traveling to Columbus for an upcoming game, as I’ll share some ideas of where to stay, eat and play when in town. Whether it’s your first or an annual trip, Columbus has much to offer and there are many reasons to stay the night and make it a getaway.

Arena District

Nationwide Arena, home of the Columbus Blue Jackets, is located within the Arena District , a 95-acre planned development. The district features restaurants, nightclubs, the Arena Grand Theatre, Huntington Park (home of the Columbus Clippers) and the LC, an indoor/outdoor music hall.

Also, the Columbus Visitors Center is located just one block south of the arena. You can stop in to find out what else is going on while they’re in town, get recommendations on restaurants and even purchase tickets to the game.

Happy hours in the Short North

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

This post is part 1 of a 7 part series featuring Columbus happy hours. Whether you like to head downtown or to the suburbs, we have you covered. Check back each week as Experience Columbus staff spotlight their favorite areas of Columbus to meet friends, share a drink and have some fun.

In this post, Kelly explores the happy hour specials abundant in the Short North Arts District. Stay tuned for future posts in the series as we explore Grandview, Park Street, downtown, the University District at OSU, Easton Town Center and Worthington.

Who doesn’t love a great happy hour? It’s the perfect opportunity to unwind after a busy day, catch up with friends and coworkers, and best of all enjoy tasty drinks and snacks at a fraction of the price. My go to spot is the Short North Arts District . With 20+ restaurants lining High Street, the choices are both diverse and plentiful; the tough part is figuring out exactly where to go. And if you’re anything like me, it’s usually a game time decision based on my mood and my group. (more…)

24 hours in Columbus: Visiting friends edition

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

If you only had 24 hours to spend in Columbus, what would you do? This was a hard question for me to answer, but I’ve come up with a list of must sees and must dos that I feel will leave any visitor with an experience uniquely Columbus.

I’m sharing these ideas in a three part series - the first post is geared to families, the next to the business traveler, and finally, a post to help a local decide what to do with visiting friends or family.

Here’s part three of three, with suggestions geared to residents looking to entertain visiting friends or family.

———————————————————-

We all have friends and family come to visit us. And inevitably we all get asked the question, “So, what are we going to do while in town?”  Check out the following ideas for a fun Columbus experience and give your visitors a better sense of why you call Columbus home.

Where to Eat
My favorite place to take family and friends to eat in Columbus is Tasi Cafe . Located just behind High Street, Tasi’s offers freshly prepared comfort food with a unique flair. The casual atmosphere makes it a favorite of locals, and the menu offers breakfast, lunch and dinner options.

The Refectory is an AAA Four Diamond award winner, offering contemporary American cuisine and classic French cuisine. The restaurant’s location is unique - it’s inside of an old church, and the atmosphere has a rustic feel. Also, they have an amazing wine cellar with over 700 selections.

No matter what your visitors’ tastes, they are sure to find something they like at the North Market . Central Ohio’s historic public market since 1876 and located between the Short North and Arena District, it features fresh and prepared foods, and authentic ethnic cuisine. (more…)

24 hours in Columbus: Business traveler edition

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

If you only had 24 hours to spend in Columbus, what would you do? This was a hard question for me to answer, but I’ve come up with a list of must sees and must dos that I feel will leave any visitor with an experience uniquely Columbus.

I’m sharing these ideas in a three part series - the first post is geared to families, the next to the business traveler, and finally, a post to help a local decide what to do with visiting friends or family.

Here’s part two of three, with suggestions geared to the business traveler.

———————————————————-

With Columbus being the state capital and the home of 14 Fortune 1,000 companies (six of which are Fortune 500), it is a frequent stop among business travelers. The city is located within a one-day drive or one-hour flight of nearly half of the population of the U.S. and Canada, so those who do travel here may be in and out of town in a day or after a brief overnight stay.

Here are some helpful tips and recommendations to make the most of your visit.

Where to Stay
Like I mentioned in the family travel post , there are several great hotel options at varying price points around downtown - click here to check them out. One property great for business travelers is The Columbus, A Renaissance Hotel , located on N. 3rd St. in the heart of downtown and near the capital, Nationwide Arena and the Greater Columbus Convention Center . The Columbus has the city’s only seasonal rooftop pool with great views of downtown; it’s often the site of an impromptu happy hour and always a great place to relax or swim a few laps. The hotel also has Wi-Fi access throughout, a large lounge and bar in the lobby.

Where to Eat

Latitude 41

If you’re staying at The Columbus, I recommend dining at Latitude 41 .  It’s located in the lobby of the hotel and it’s known for unique American cuisine. Also, a quick walk down Gay Street (across from the hotel) offers several unique Columbus restaurant options including fine Italian at Due Amici , great comfort food at Tip Top Kitchen & Cocktails and Cuban cuisine at Plantain Cafe.

Once you’re done with business, a few great places to get dinner and a drink with locals downtown include the Elevator Brewery and Draught Haus , M restaurant, Mitchell’s Steakhouse and The River Club at Confluence Park .

Another uniquely Columbus eatery is our public market, the North Market . This is one of my favorite places to grab a quick bite and people-watch, as it is home to dozens of unique, independent merchants and farmers. Merchants offer ethnic food specialties, gourmet groceries, flowers and gifts. (more…)
