The Via Vecchia story is one of friendship and a passion for excellence. A story of friends who met by chance, and took a risk to make wine the old way. Via Vecchia is natural and simple winemaking that draws upon traditional methods that trace back to Tuscany, Italy, to a small village named Grondola. These methods, brought to Via Vecchia by one of its very own winemakers who received this knowledge from his father, is a method of making wine which has been used for thousands of years. Over the years, our reputation grew, testing tradition to see if the methods of old could scale to volume. Our high sense of integrity and commitment to the ancient way of winemaking meant we could "hand on heart" claim that our wine is something very special and unique, nothing added, nothing taken away. And here we are. The culmination of all our dreams and commitments made tangible. Making wines without compromise, wines that are truly "Beyond the Bottle". The new 8,300-square-foot space, once part of the Hoster's Brewery complex, has a rustic-meets-industrial look, with a blend of brick, stone and concrete. The bi-level space, which can accommodate nearly 500 people, has plenty of room for oak-barrel aging, retail business and private parties. They plan to take advantage of the stage and sound system. Via Vecchia, meaning the old way in Italian, will more than double the quantity from last year, using about 18 tons of grapes to produce 10,000 bottles, Elmer said. The food will be designed to match the winery's four distinctive styles: Travato (sangiovese, pinot noir), Adamo (sangiovese, cabernet franc), Jorro-Ma (syrah) and Trouve (cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc). A fifth wine, Evident (pinot noir), is still aging, Rosi said. However, it likely will be a limited selection and not make it into the regular lineup, he said. A white wine could eventually become part of Via Vecchia's repertoire, he said. Via Vecchia started out as a hobby but was officially founded in 2006 in the basement of Rosi's Powell home. The winery has accounts at more than a dozen restaurants, grocers and wine shops across the state. The area is ready for Via Vecchia's sophisticated atmosphere in the Brewery District. He said there are 12,000 condos within walking distance of the place. A grand opening likely will be scheduled at the end of the September, when the shipment of grapes arrives for the annual "crush" event.
