This is the time of year that can be easiest to hole up at home and wait until the spring thaw. But that's a great recipe for cabin fever. On those days you just need to get out of the house, a trip to Columbus is in order! Whether it's an unexpected snow day or a mid-winter weekend getaway, here are four ideas for how to mix up your routine and reinvigorate your family.
Museum Play Spaces Museum visits are always great during cooler months, but two spots in Columbus have upped the ante and created spaces specially for kids that highlight learning and creativity along with good old fashioned fun. Little Kidsspace at COSI is a huge, newly-renovated space that provides lots of structures for younger kids to climb, explore and pretend. From a farm to a climbing wall to a space to play with water (complete with raincoats to borrow) this is a great winter-time version of a playground - only with some basic science lessons built into the fun. The Center for Creativity at the Columbus Museum of Art is for people of all ages, but incorporates children's perspectives at every step.
Theater for Kids Columbus is lucky to host a huge variety of live entertainment options for kids and families. CATCO Is Kids offers a year-long series of special performance geared specially for kids. In March, they present The Wolf Tales, which interprets well known fairy tales like Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs from the wolf's perspective. Additionally, Columbus Children's Theatre has a full schedule of engaging shows, including Arthur and the Magic Sword in February and Freckleface Strawberry in March.
Explore Nature Grange Insurance Audubon Center is a great spot to explore - in the shadows of downtown, but it feels miles away. There are great places to explore and learn about wildlife indoors on inclement days, and the outdoor spaces are fun to hike, bike and climb. Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park's herd of bison make it a fun place for a short hike, and the interpretive center is a fun and educational place to warm up and take in expansive views. Dress in layers and don't forget sunglasses - the sun shines bright and reflects off the snow. If you want to take your winter adventure to the next level, you can even rent cross country skis and snowshoes from Columbus Outdoor Pursuits!
