After four years of college reading, I am excited to read what I wanted, whenever I wanted and at whatever pace I wanted. Lucky for me, and visitors like you, Columbus is home to several independent bookstores that are unique to the area. Book Loft 2But before we start our itinerary, I cannot think of anything that goes better with a good book than a great cup of coffee. A local tried and true is Café Brioso on Gay Street in Downtown Columbus. They specialize in high-quality coffees and teas. Plus, their coffee is roasted in-store by their owner and roastmaster. The next stop is one of the most popular bookstores in Columbus, The Book Loft in German Village. The Book Loft is made up of several historic buildings converted into a 32 room bookstore with floor to ceiling bargain books. Take caution though, you can get easily lost in the maze of rooms. A short drive to Grandview Heights will bring you to Acorn Bookshop, a place Columbus Monthly once dubbed “the literary equivalent of Cheers.” With a rich history in Columbus, Acorn Bookshop boasts roughly 50,000 books in their inventory ranging from beach reads to collectibles. thurberIf you’re looking for children’s books, you can’t miss Cover to Cover Books for Young Readers. In business for over 30 years, Cover to Cover has the latest in books for the youngest readers.

For another spin on reading, check out Thurber House, the former home of humorist James Thurber. Thurber House brings in nationally know authors for book talks and readings, and also offers writing workshops for kids and adults. If you really want to get immersed in the experience, read Thurber's My Life and Hard Times and The Thurber Carnival, which details his life at the house. Now that you have plenty of books to read head out to one of Columbus’ great outdoor spaces like the Goodale Park, Columbus Commons, or the Topiary Park and immerse yourself in reading while enjoying the great outdoors.
