sassafras apple pieI think it's safe to say that pie has knocked the trendy cupcake off its pedestal. Nothing against the cupcake, but pie is such an iconic

sassafras bakery When I posed the question on Twitter, the hands-down vote winner was Sassafras Bakery. Sassafras has been selling at farmers markets for a few years, but just opened a brick-and-mortar shop in Worthington earlier this year. Right now, the seasonal offering is Sassafras' Signature Apple Pie - available in double crust or with a walnut struessel topping. Food & Wine Magazine has called this "A purist's pie," and Jeni Britton-Bauer of Jeni's Ice Creams names it, "The best pie you'll ever eat." Do I need to say more?

Cafe Brioso, the downtown coffee roastery, has a big array of pastries made fresh daily, and their pie draws crowds, too. Their berry pies are particularly crave-worthy, and it pairs perfectly with a decadent cafe Cubano and a window seat overlooking one of the trendiest corners downtown.

Honeykiss Bakery is a home-based business that also opened this year. If you're coming in from out of town for Thanksgiving, impress your hosts by ordering a pumpkin, sweet potato or pecan pie to bring along. You can either pick up your pies or have them delivered!

If you think pies are just sweet, we've got a savory option, too!  Salam Bakery prepares Middle Eastern meat and veggie pies from its location on Cleveland Avenue. Spiced with mild blends, these small pies with house-made pita crust are in the $1.50-$2 range, so you can pick up a selection and share.
