M has long been one of my favorite places to eat and imbibe in Columbus. It is also consistently been ranked as one of the top ten restaurants in town since it opened over ten years ago. Located inside Miranova tower, along the Scioto River, M has a great view of the Scioto Mile and downtown, especially from its outdoor terrace. The cuisine is as eclectic as the atmosphere and lighting inside the restaurant. M’s menu features American cuisine, influenced by the assertive flavors of Pacific Rim and Europe.
Before we get to the food, I cannot mention M without giving praise to their award-winning mixologist Cris Dehlavi. She is by far the most decorated and internationally recognized mixologist in Columbus and is very much responsible for putting Columbus on the map in the mixology/spirits world. If you want to try one of her her signature cocktails, go with her “Marquee,” using Belvedere Citrus, Cointreau Noir, agave nectar, blood orange puree and fresh lemon juice; or try her showstopper, the “Black Orchid” with Belvedere Black Raspberry, St. Germain Elderflower, white cranberry and fresh lemon juice poured over a candid black orchid frozen in a handmade orb of ice. She also always offers a few seasonal cocktails as well. But nothing excites a true mixologist more than when you tell them a spirit you are in the mood for, be it vodka, gin, etc. and say, “just make me something, surprise me.” I am telling you that there is no better way to get an amazing, personally created libation, then step back and watch as she makes a hand crafted delight, usually poured into a class with a hand carved piece of ice.
Onto the food, my favorite appetizer in town can be found at M, Butter Poached Dutch Harbor Alaskan King Crab, poached and served in a Mason jar with toasted baguette slices on the side, it literally melts in your mouth. They are also well known for their sushi, offering five rolls, a surf-n-turf and a bento box. For an entrée, sea scallops, glazed Amish chicken, pork chops and filet mignon are all stellar. Their side dishes alone could be a meal in and of themselves if ordered together, which I have been known to do. Lobster mashed potatoes, black truffle asparagus and cheddar and truffle mac-n-cheese are stand outs.
Now with food and libations this good, as you might expect, M has some of the best service in town. The servers themselves are very knowledgeable on the menu and pairings. So much so, that I often go in and just tell them to work with Cris behind the bar to make me a paired meal, meaning a mini-cocktail paired with each course they bring out. This a great way to taste the menu with friends and to really see just how amazing Cris is without ordering several cocktails yourself and then figuring out how to get home.
With a great happy hour including half-off appetizers and sushi on Friday’s, M is accessible and affordable for everyone. So weather looking for a place for a special occasion or just somewhere to get one of the best cocktails of your life with friends or family, M is a must visit place next time you are in Columbus.
