Columbus will love you, baby! Love is undoubtedly in the air this month, but we’re not here today to help you with your date plans for Valentine’s Day; that’ll be for another post. We are here, however, to provide you with a list of live local music this month that will leave you with a warm feeling inside. Whether that be through tributes to two legendary lovers in their own separate rights, one of the hottest, good-spirited local acts, or a double performance from a group that has long been known to spread good vibes around town, there are lots of options here in February that’ll more than satisfy any good feeling you’ll be trying to chase with a Valentine’s dinner date at the nexus of this month.
Below you can read about six local shows in February that don’t center around Valentine’s Day.
Wilco Tribute @ Rambling House
Rambling House has attracted high quality and a wide range of tribute shows to their eclectic soda front. The Wilco salute kicking off the month fits perfectly into both of those above categories. This first-of-its-kind event in the local music scene will take place at a venue that has as much character as Wilco’s varied indie music, so solid matchmaking on the booker’s end. Columbus acts that will be contributing to the tribute include The Resisters, Woosley Band, The Devil Doves, Sean Marshall and the Near Miss, The Happening, Straw & The Scarecrow, Anthony Mascarello and other special TBA guests.
Time: 8 p.m. | Date: Saturday, Feb. 1 | Address: 310 E. Hudson St. | Admission: $10 ADV/$15 DOS
El Camino Acid w/ Hydrone @ Cafe Bourbon St.
El Camino Acid may not be a name that has floated around the Columbus music scene for very long, but that doesn’t mean that its members don’t have the experience to already demand hyped-up crowds. Consisting of members from successful Athens, Ohio, bands like CAAMP and The Crooked Spines, you’ll probably hear a sound closer to punk or a polished garage rock such as The Strokes when turning on El Camino Acid. This garage rock Thursday night double feature will also include Columbus act Hydrone, from who you’ll be hearing more of a stronger punk presence combined with a bit of psychedelia.
Time: Doors 8 p.m. | Date: Thursday, Feb. 6 | Address: 2216 Summit St. | Admission: Free
Andy Shaw Band presents a Tribute to Bob Marley @ Rumba Cafe
One of the staples of the Columbus music scene, the Andy Shaw Band has been spreading good vibes throughout the community for over 15 years now. The group has a strong familial foundation as well as a deep appreciation for rock, reggae and roots music, which is very integral in giving life to their live shows. They’ve also been performing this tribute for seven years now and only for the second time at Rumba Cafe. Sharing the bill with the Andy Shaw Band this time around will be Columbus reggae acts Lungu Vybz and Doug Simpson and The Faith Band. Tickets are also available to purchase in person at Rumba Cafe, Used Kid Records and Magnolia Thunderpussy Records.
Time: Doors 8 p.m. | Date: Saturday, Feb. 8 | Address: 2507 Summit St. | Admission: $12/U21 +$2
Dance Furiously @ The Basement
Up there with the other elite Columbus jam bands like Electric Orange Peel and BareFuzz that can beautifully blend genres, Dance Furiously showed Columbus what was up in 2019. Seeing how many heads they can turn in 2020 will be one of the big storylines to pay attention to in the local music scene. They’ll be able to do that early in the year with a big hometown performance at The Basement. They’re a band that will come at you with loads of funk, a dash of hip-hop and progressive breakdowns, not to mention they’ll give you an extremely fun experience. The show will also feature Columbus act The Esteems and Nashville band The Sedonas.
Time: Doors 7 p.m. | Date: Saturday, Feb. 15 | Address: 391 Neil Ave. | Admission: $12 ADV/$15 DOS
Lost Weekend Records 17-Year Anniversary Show @ Ace of Cups
Lost Weekend Records won’t be entering adulthood yet, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t celebrate another year of this wonderful record store’s existence. The shop will be keeping it strictly local when it blows out the candles, and they’ll be keeping it on-brand with Ace of Cups judging by the bands they have on the setlist as of now. So far, the lineup that has been announced for the celebration includes Bribed FUZZ, SEGA GENOCIDE, Thee Thees, Second State Butchers, and DANA with more to be announced. All of these groups come with a quirkier edge to them, some harder than the next. This year the theme of the anniversary show will be 'Employee Night.'
Time: 8 p.m. | Date: Saturday, Feb. 22 | Address: 2619 N. High St.
MojoFlo is another band that has been an outstanding, long-standing gem in the scope of the Columbus music scene. Recently, the group that brings funk to life on the dancefloor has been gearing up for the release of their debut album. (We previewed the lead single, “Perpetual Conduit of Positivity,” on our blog earlier this month.) Starting their press run early before the LP drops sometime this summer, MojoFlo is packing two performances into the new Natalie’s venue with an early and a late show. Whether they will debut new music hasn’t been revealed, but they’ll surely be energized covers of your favorite tunes and people dancing from front to back.
Time: Doors 6 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. | Date: Friday, Feb. 28 | Address: 945 King Ave. | Admission: $15 GA/$20 TABLE
