We’re about smack dab in the middle of summer, which means there is no shortage of eclectic local shows to attend. Although festivals will keep you outside enjoying some of Columbus’ most beautiful locations—such as the Scioto Mile—as a music community, we cannot forget about the venues that kept us warm in the winter. Plus, you’ll be able to enjoy those same patios a lot more than when you were bundled up around a fire rubbing your hands together for warmth in between sets.
Columbus doesn’t have to worry about any of that for the time being, so check out the concerts and venues below and enjoy some patio drinks with your friends while being serenaded by Columbus’ best.
SummerFlight 2K19 @ Skully’s Music Diner
New age rockers and Columbus essentials Conscious Pilot are invading Skully’s Music Diner, feeding off the energy of July 4 the day before. Flying in with Conscious Pilot for this grassroots event will be psychedelic reggae group Cosmosis, Athens prodigies Acrylic Grooves and the gnarly shredding of the George Barrie Band. On top of being exposed to some of the best live acts floating around Columbus, visual artists and entrepreneurs will be on site to further enhance the festival vibes. More acts and surprises to be announced.
Time: 7 p.m. | Date: Friday, July 5 | Address: 1151 N. High St. | Admission: $10 | 18+
Sidestage @ The Summit
A genre that is creeping out of the underground in Columbus and becoming the most accessible to locals has to be electronic dance music (EDM). With more local summer festivals making it a point to include this genre—or even dedicating the entire event to EDM—we’re going to see more shows like Sidestage popping up across town. However, with Sidestage providing monthly accessibility to EDM nights, it’s a good sign for Columbus residents who want to get lost in the beat. Representing Columbus at this event will be Kimono Dog and S.MOSS, while out-of-towners include FLORA and Day N Knight.
Time: 8 p.m. | Date: Friday, July 12 | Address: 2210 Summit St. | Admission: $8 / $12 DOS | 18+
Ruvane — 19 CD Release Party @ Big Room Bar
Born in Iowa but currently calling Columbus home, Ruvane is a name you’ll want to jot down because his busy family and touring life don’t give him much time to play to the locals. With an acoustic folk-rock style and almost 25 years of trying to break through the music industry, Ruvane has managed to incorporate inspiration from his everyday surroundings—like having a family, life and loss—making Big Room Bar a perfect fit for his intimate shows. Ruvane shows also incorporate looping elements, but this time around his trio will be joining the stage with him. The edginess he provides to his folk-rock is what truly sets him apart from other Columbus musicians, and getting to hear the new album for the first time live will be a special experience for many. Singer-songwriter Joey Viola will be kicking the night off as well.
Time: Doors 7 p.m. | Date: Friday, July 19 | Address: 1036 S. Front St. | Admission: Free | All Ages
the Roof Dogs’ Going Away Party @ Ace of Cups
Bands come and go from the local scene if they’re serious about their craft and getting their music out to the masses. However, that doesn’t mean we’re not allowed to be sad when a local gem is ready to take a step in a new direction. Five years making music in Columbus, and the Roof Dogs are ready to try out their legs in Chi-Town. Their ‘90s influenced indie-rock struck a chord amongst locals despite Columbus being a place that is always wanting to accept the next new, big thing. Three Columbus acts and best friends of the band will be joining the Roof Dogs in saying goodbye, including Slimfit, Hello Emerson and Steven King. Watch out for some new the Roof Dogs material leading up to their departure.
Time: Doors 8 p.m. | Date: Friday, July 19 | Address: 2619 N. High St. | Admission: $5 | 18+
LIVE! @ Craft & Vinyl
With over a year of experience as a business, Craft & Vinyl is making its presence known amongst the record shop and live music arenas of Columbus. This unique record store also serves as a recording studio, performance stage and, of course, some of your favorite local brews on tap. This specific LIVE! series will start off with a couple of acoustic sets from locals Ted Spradling and Athena. Following those two acts up will be Experience Columbus top singer-songwriter veteran Lisa Gain and her band the Rusty Silos. Closing out the night will be the souped-up acoustics of tOd and the Bad Ideas and The 3 Speeds. Come early and stay late.
Time: Doors 7 p.m. | Date: Friday, July 26 | Address: 1806 W. 5th Ave. | Admission: Free | 21+
Hot and Heavy Concert @ Classics Victory Live
Three Ohio bands that are a little spread out across the state from each other will be joining forces at Classics Victory Live. If you’re looking for a bit more of hard rock than what was described above, the Hot and Heavy showcase will surely fill that void. Starting with the furthermost band, Wake Magnolia, who reign from Akron, describe themselves as an alternative/dirty melodic rock. A little bit closer to home, The Forty will still be bringing rock roots to the table, but expect a tinge of grunge from the Grove City band. Finally, representing Columbus as the first performers of the night, The Odds of Being Born will most definitely be bringing the heaviest of riffs and breakdowns throughout the night. Victory Live doesn’t get enough love as a music venue, so make sure to make it down there sometime.
Time: Doors 9 p.m. | Date: Saturday, July 27 | Address: 543 S. High St. | Admission: Free
