Founded in 1989 by Marcus Hu, Jon Gerrans, and Mike Thomas, Strand Releasing is one of the country’s most esteemed distributors of challenging independent film. Over the years, the company has built a worldwide stable of some of the most acclaimed features and filmmakers of the past generation.
To commemorate its 30th anniversary, Hu invited 30 leading filmmakers from around the world to contribute a one-minute film. When screened together, the projects constitute a moving and delirious celebration of the art of cinema. You’ll see footage by numerous Wex guests, including Karim Aïnouz, Catherine Breillat, Claire Denis, Guy Maddin, John Waters, and Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Visit this page closer to the screening for a full list. (30 mins., DCP)
After the screening, Hu joins filmmakers Gregg Araki and Guy Maddin to discuss their participation in the Strand project. To round out the evening Araki, an icon of the 1990s’ New Queer Cinema movement, will introduce a screening of his landmark film The Living End, about a drifter and a film critic, both gay and HIV positive, who embark on a freewheeling road trip together.
