This exhibition features works by artists who have exhibited in the vibrant Short North Arts District over the past 30+ years, selected from the collection of Columbus native Thomas Arlen Wagner. Curated by Wagner himself, this collection showcases the diverse scope and exquisite talent found in the galleries and exhibition spaces of the Short North.

Thomas Arlen Wagner has been collecting art for nearly 35 years. He acquired a few pieces from artist friends while attending The Ohio State University, but never gave much thought to collecting. In 1984 however, after discovering the "We're Depressed" comic strip in New Musical Express, he decided to specifically collect the artwork of strip creator, Mark Beyer.

That same year was also the first year of the Short North's Gallery Hop. Wagner attended regularly. His first Short North purchase was a piece of Mexican folk art from the Ohio Ethnographic Gallery. (That piece will be included in the exhibition!)

Wagner continued to dabble in collecting art from various sources for about a dozen years. Then, in 1997, after seeing the digitally manipulated photography of Scott Galloway at the Ohio State Fair Art Exhibition, he made a conscious decision to support Scott and other Columbus artists by regularly purchasing work. Galloway and other local favorites, like Morris Jackson and Daniel Ferlan have frequently exhibited in the Short North.

Artwork from Wagner's collection has been loaned to several museums including, the American Folk Art Museum in NYC, Intuit: The Center For Intuitive Art in Chicago, and the Gund Gallery at Kenyon College in Gambier, OH. A dozen of his Mark Beyer paintings were loaned to Halle Saint Pierre in Paris for the "25 Years of Raw Vision" exhibition.

Wagner has curated several exhibitions as well, including "Mark Beyer: With/Without Text" at OSU Urban Arts Space, Jan-Feb 2013, "The Art of Mark Beyer" at Gallery 831, Oct 2014, a smaller version of the OSU exhibition, assembled for the Folk Art Society of America's annual meeting held in Columbus that year, and "Outsider or Insider? Art! : The Thomas Arlen Wagner Collection" at the Mansfield Art Center, June-July 2017. He is currently curating three upcoming exhibitions for the Mansfield Art Center, including "Just Local Folk - The Andy Hudson Collection" on view Sept. 29 - Oct. 28, 2018.
