Based on actual events occurring in a convent in Brighton, New York, Agnes of God tells the story of Dr. Martha Livingstone, a court-appointed psychiatrist who is sent to evaluate Sister Agnes, a young nun whose infant has been found strangled and left lifeless in the wastebasket of her bedroom. With Agnes claiming a virgin conception and having no memory of giving birth, Livingstone must distinguish between lies and the nun's perception-altering faith. Complicating her investigation, Livingstone continually clashes with the overbearing Mother Miriam Ruth who insists that Livingstone leave Agnes alone. Livingstone's questions force all three women to re-examine the meaning of faith and the power of love leading to a dramatic, compelling climax.
