The King Arts Complex will celebrate Autism Awareness Month with “Art Through Her Eyes: The Transformation of Tommi Lee” Friday, April 26th –May 10th in the Corridor Gallery at the King Arts Complex located at 867 Mt. Vernon Ave. Columbus, OH. This will be the first of many upcoming exhibitions featuring works by people with developmental disabilities.
“Art Through Her Eyes: The Transformation of Tommi Lee” will showcase the works of Tommi Lee Gillard. Tommi Lee is on the autism spectrum. Her experience from working with her Developmental Disability Providers (Food for Good Thought, Shopworks Theatre and Open Door Art Studio) has made a significant impact in her emergence and transformation. “I had no idea that Tommi Lee had art skills until I saw her first piece of art from Open Door Art Studio. In addition, since she has been attending Shopworks Theatre, she is becoming more engaged and confident in her abilities to express her thoughts. As a parent of a child on the autism spectrum, we know how easily frustrated they become when they can’t articulate their thoughts. The arts is both therapeutic and transformative”, expressed Toni Johnson, Tommi Lee’s mother.
