Carve your very own wooden spoon while learning basic gouge techniques that apply to many other carving disciplines!

A great project for beginners, with enough challenge to satisfy more experienced carvers as well, spoons are one of the most comprehensive and versatile carving exercises around. Carving a spoon involves skills and considerations that translate to most any other carving project or style on some level. While carving a wooden spoon, you’ll learn the basics of wood and tool selection, safety and sharpening, design and blank preparation, and a little about finishing.

In this class, we’ll use primarily an 8mm #5 shallow palm gouge (provided, or if you have something comparable, you may use your own tools), and some other common alternative tools will also be demonstrated or available to try. Most students come away with their spoon roughly complete, and equipped with the knowledge and reference materials to help them continue to explore woodcarving!
