This Fall, the Upstairs Arts Space and Whitney and Ventola Music Studios are bringing together a brass quintet and a comic/caricature artist for a movie-themed open house-style event.
The Brazen Brass formed as a brass quintet over a decade ago when five people whose careers had taken different directions since music school didn’t want lose touch with their horns. The group's style has evolved over the years, starting with the typical people-pleasing repertoire, then ultimately settling on what pleases them. They have performed at a variety of venues, ranging from campus bars to farmers’ markets to the International Brass Chamber Music Festival to a random front yard or two. This November will be their second time performing at the Upstairs Arts Space at Whitney & Ventola Music Studios, where they will present short sets of movie music that all audiences are sure to enjoy.
They will be joined by Brent Bowman. Brent will be celebrating the close of his solo exhibition and onsite doing caricatures of attendees. His work has appeared in publications by Image Comics, Caliber Press and NBM Publishing. He has been nominated for the prestigious YALSA award and the ALA Amanda Bloomer Award. He has also won the small press SPACE prize in 2015, 2017 and 2018 for both his comics work in both graphic novels and short form comics. This event will be the last public opportunity to view his solo show.
Upstairs Arts Space events are free, family-friendly and open to the public. Donations (suggested $5-$10 pp) to support the space and event costs are gratefully accepted. The space is located in the Beechwold Building between Ritzy's and Beechwold Hardware. Enjoy the free off-street parking and look for the stairs behind the stone facade.
