Pattern, color and art are reflective of the time that they are created, visually capturing the mood and spirit of the era. Neons, pastels, memphis-style patterns and slick surfaces are used by both Claire Smith and Dana Lynn Harper in CYA L8R to create contemporary sculpture and assemblage works. Both artists were born in the late 80's in Columbus, OH. They experienced growing up through the 90's, which has had an obvious influence on both artists' work. Reflective of growing up a girl in the 1990's, the works are loud and boisterous, unabashed and unashamed. Like fashion in the 80's and early 90's, the patterns and colors are loud. By taking patterns, color, forms and surfaces that make up their past and remixing them into new works of art, the artists create unique works that can only belong to this time and place. The playfulness and untroubled nature of these artists' work borders on humor and the absurd but also channels a sense of childhood sentimentality and promotes the artists' individuality and empowerment. The works pay homage to the past while simultaneously creating the artists' future-self through the act of invention and creation.
