Presented by Thurber House, Evenings with Authors is a series of readings and chats featuring nationally known bestselling authors. Each reading and Q&A lasts about an hour, followed by a book signing and a punch and cookies reception.
About the Book and Author
Janet Beard makes her debut appearance at Thurber House with her novel, The Atomic City Girls. In 1944, 18-year-old June Walker boards a bus for a city that doesn't officially exist'Oak Ridge, Tennessee'where she begins work on the Manhattan Project. The purpose of her work is never explained. Longing to know more about her top-secret assignment, June begins an affair with Sam Cantor, a physicist who clearly understands the end goal. When Hiroshimas bombing brings the truth about Oak Ridge into devastating focus, June must confront her ideals of loyalty, patriotism, and war itself. Raised in Tennessee, Janet attended New York Universitys Tisch School of the Arts. She is working on a collection of short stories and a childrens book.
