Expanded Cinema Experiments of Stan VanDerBeek Introduced by Gloria Sutton Leap Before You Look Related Screenings Classics Wed, Nov 9, 2016 7 PM Art historian Gloria Sutton visits the Wex to discuss the impact of Black Mountain College on the work of prolific experimental filmmaker and animator Stan VanDerBeek. VanDerBeek's work encompassed ambitious experiments with multiple projectors and collaborations with leading figures in dance, such as Merce Cunningham and Yvonne Rainer, as well as computer animation pioneer Ken Knowlton. The program will include screenings of Poemfield (1967), Mankinda (1957), Image After Image (1967), and a selection of handmade slides (c. 1965). Sutton is assistant professor of contemporary art history and new media at Northeastern University in Boston. She is the author of The Experience Machine: Stan VanDerBeek's Movie-Drome and Expanded Cinema (2015). (Prog. approx. 90 mins)
