Join local jazz super-group FLIPPO for a special tribute to the music of Weather Report, an influential American jazz fusion band of the 1970s and early 1980s. This Grammy Award winning group was led by keyboard player Joe Zawinul and saxophonist Wayne Shorter.
Columbus-based FLIPPO displays instrumental virtuosity and creative energy in the spirit of sonic colors and innovation born of the funk and jazz-rock fusion movements of the 1970s and beyond. Their performance will feature the band playing some of the funkiest and “fusion-laden” grooves of the past 30+ years.
The name of the band pays fond tribute to tenor saxophonist Bob Marvin who during the ascendancy of television appeared for many years entertaining central Ohio viewers as Flippo the Clown. A superb band was a regular and integral part of his shows. FLIPPO is Michael Cox on sax, Dennis Hodgges on guitar, Erik Augis on keys, Andy Woodson on bass and Louis Tsamous on drums.
FLIPPO will also be performing original music by members of the band, as well as music by some of their other inspirations, such as Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters, and Pat Metheny.
