The Westerville Symphony at Otterbein University celebrates the dog days of summer with its Sounds of Summer concert on Sunday, August 18th at 6:30 pm.  The free concert takes place at the Amphitheater at Alum Creek Park and is part of the Westerville Community Concert series. Unfortunately astronaut Katheryn Sullivan will no longer be able to join us for this concert.

The concert music includes movements from Gustav Holst’s "The Planets."  Premiered in 1918, it continues to be a widely popular and enduring symphonic masterpiece.   Holst was inspired by the astronomical aspects of the planets writing to a friend in 1913: “…recently the character of each planet suggested lots to me, and I have been studying astrology fairly closely.”  We will perform "Mars: The Bringer of War", "Mercury: The Winged Messenger" and "Jupiter: The Bringer of Jollity."

Many movies and documentaries have been made about space and the soundtracks, evoking the majestic aura of their space themes, are perfect for outdoor concerts.  The symphony will perform music from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", "Apollo 13", "The Right Stuff", "Star Trek" and "Take Flight."
