During this workshop, students will fabricate, carve, and assemble seats using traditional stone setting methods. Packed with planned projects and plenty of practice, you will learn everything from how to successfully prong set, flush set, strip set, channel set, and pavé to how to work with gravers and bur control. Tips, tricks, and alternative methods will also be covered to translate these setting styles into your own style of work. Students must have soldering, sawing, and metal smithing experience.
About the Instructor:
Bethany James creates textural contemporary jewelry that focuses on the value of imperfection. An experienced metalsmith, Bethany earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Columbus College of Art and Design and continued her learning as a professional goldsmith. Her jewelry is grounded in material experimentation, discovering tensions, and developing unique impulses into wearable art. Bethany’s work maintains a familiar identity between the contemporary jewelry and the wearer. Her work is driven by a continuous exploration of material and maker error. Supporting the local community is a passion of Bethany’s as she co-founded the Art Your Way Foundation to support young professionals in navigating their creative careers and advocate anti-bullying workshops.
