"In an age when information flashes relentlessly past our eyes, I have felt the need to pause and rethink our world in my work. I have created two related bodies of work for this exhibition. In making these works, I have rethought my artistic perspectives on the natural environment, culture, and human relationships. My paper cut-out concept and methods have evolved from the traditional paper-cuts that I grew up with in China. I explore paper-cutting, painting and drawing, mapping various views of landscape as seen through the mirrored reflections in rivers and lakes. Different from traditional Asian and Western landscape perspectives, I'm interested in perspectives reflected in the water that compress surrounding landscapes. In a single cut-out, these landscapes tie the sky and everything in-between, including unseen movements, to the earth. Lighting casts shadows to create layers of lines and shapes that trans- form the dimensionality and depth of the cut-out views. Recently, I began to work on figures and paint mono-chromatic portraits. I positioned each portrait behind a cut-out screen to create a window that invites close-up viewing. My intention is to leave space for dialogue, imagination and questions through each visual experience." - Leah Wong
