The visual language of comic books and, by extension, manga, anime, and video games, has been a lifelong preoccupation for both Aaron M. Fitzwater and Matt Kish. Each artist, born in different decades, raised in different parts of the country, and growing up in different circumstances, found in comics a means for self-expression, self-definition, and even self-loathing. Both artists use comic imagery and collage to create new meanings and narratives from culturally familiar material.

Born in Midwestern Ohio, Aaron M. Fitzwater is a collage artist living in Chicago. His work has been shown throughout Columbus and Chicago. A lifetime lover of comics and manga, he also has a cat named Milky.

Matt Kish is a self-taught artist and a librarian. He lives in southwest Ohio with his wife, their frog, and far far too many books.

Symbolism, Imagery, Allegory. My work's overlying arch symbolizes family heritage. Handmade by the narrator (me), the new work is comprised of images born by generations of family members and tradition.

Timothy J. Karpinski grew up near the Appalachian Trail in the woods of New Jersey. As a child he was obsessed with building forts and damming streams. As time passed, skateboarding and art entered the picture. To this day, Karpinski still spends much of his time building forts, damming streams, skateboarding and making art every day in Portland, Oregon.

934 Gallery's 2018-2019 programming calendar is funded in part by a Project Support Grant from the Greater Columbus Arts Council.
