Introduced by author R. J. Smith

Winter/Spring 2018 Preview

"One of the most important and influential American independent filmmakers of the last half-century."'Manohla Dargis, New York Times

Author of the new biography American Witness: The Art and Life of Robert Frank, R. J. Smith introduces a selection of three Robert Frank films. Tonights screening includes the Beat Generation touchstone Pull My Daisy (1959, directed with Alfred Leslie), featuring poets Allen Ginsberg, Peter Orlovsky, and Gregory Corso; Paper Route (2002); and the autobiographical True Story (2004/08).

Frank is an acclaimed photographer known for his stark, unflinching travelogue The Americans (1958) as well as his association with The Rolling Stones. Franks work graced the cover of their record Exile on Main Street, and he directed the controversial concert-tour doc Cocksucker Blues. (77 mins., 16mm and digital video)

Join us in the Film/Video Theater at 4 p.m. as Smith discusses his new book and signs copies afterward.
