Sarah Weinstock – A Self Portrait at 40
Opening Reception: Friday, March 8, 2019, 7pm-10pm
Sarah Weinstock is back with her first solo show in 10 years. The Vanderelli Room will host a mixed-media investigation of attraction, sexuality, intuition, movement, dance, color, fashion, psychology, femininity, and community.
Sarah is inspired by human evolution, sexual selection, fitness indicators, unconscious attractions, and intuitive desires. She perceives our existence as resulting from an unbroken chain of successful mating strategies through a mammalian thread. In this sense, Sarah sees art making as one way humans have evolved to advertise their genetic fitness. Sexual selection has therefore shaped our species into artists, dancers, singers, comedians, poets, writers, storytellers and philosophers, among other examples that bring talent and brainpower to the forefront. The display of such abilities is then available for us to form our own opinions or conclusions, and to perhaps have our attraction piqued.
Through performance, installation, drawing, painting, video, costumes, community events, and dance parties, Sarah Weinstock will share her ideas as they coalesce on the occasion of her 40th birthday.
OPENING RECEPTION INFO
There is a high heels element to the opening reception. However, HIGH HEELS ARE NOT REQUIRED, so please also bring your flats. High heels are wild to try on or wear for a short period of time, and a selection will be available (as well as support). In addition, guests are invited to bring pairs of heeled shoes that need an opportunity to get out of the house. Trying on and sharing is encouraged – select a variety and wear them all! **Tip: Cowboy boots are often easier to find in larger mens sizes.
