Masha Hamilton is the 2017 John E. Nance Writer-In-Residence at Thurber House. Hamilton's fifth novel, What Changes Everything, explores America's twisted, misguided, generous relationship with Afghanistan through an ensemble of heartening characters. Stela Sidorova, who owns a used bookstore in Ohio, writes letter after letter hoping to comprehend the loss of a son on an Afghan battlefield. We witness the stories of Mandy, the mother of a gravely wounded soldier from Texas, Danil, an angry Brooklyn street artist, and Todd, an aid worker who for a moment let down his guard in a Kabul marketplace. Meanwhile, we follow the lives of two Afghans who reveal the complexity of their culture, the emotions that hold it together, and those that threaten to fracture it.
