Valter’s at the Maennerchor, a casual restaurant with Old World trappings and modern menu flourishes at 976 S. High Street in Columbus Ohio. The restaurant was founded by Valter Veliu, whose cooking and management style won over Werner Niehaus, president of the Maennerchor’s board of directors. Valter has taken a creative turn with some menu items, such as the Jaegermeister wings, marinated for two days in German mustard, espresso and other ingredients. They are baked and grilled, not deep-fried. House-cooked corned beef makes its way into several dishes, including the sauerkraut balls. Sandwiches and bratwursts – one purchased from locally made Falter’s Fine Meats – are served on pretzel buns. For breakfast, served on the weekends, customers can opt for corned beef and hash, omelets, pancakes and scratch-made Belgian-style waffles, among many other dishes. Valter likes the warm and cozy setting of the 3,500-square-foot heritage house, also nicknamed the Dutch House, built in 1907. Many of the fixtures are original.
