Sports in the Arena District
The Arena District is home to many of Columbus major local sports teams, and come 2021, one more will be added to the mix.
Nationwide Arena opened in 2000 and is home to the National Hockey League’s Columbus Blue Jackets. The only National Hockey League franchise in Ohio, the Columbus Blue Jackets have become a force to be reckoned with in the NHL. The Blue Jackets play in the NHL’s Eastern Conference and host games at Nationwide Arena from mid-September through mid-April.
The Columbus Clippers, the AAA affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, moved to the Arena District in 2009 and have hit a home run with their family-friendly Huntington Park, named the best ballpark in America. Take advantage of their many promotions throughout the season, including fan favorite, Dime-a-Dog nights. The season runs from April to September and includes day and night games throughout the season.
The Columbus Crew SC has emerged as one of Central Ohio's most popular sports attractions. The team plays in the United States’ first soccer-specific MAPFRE Stadium March through October. The Crew will move to a brand new stadium in the Arena District in 2021.
Sports aficionados can sip local beers or nosh on food from area restaurants at MAPFRE Stadium during a Columbus Crew SC game. The popular Hot Chicken Takeover launched their food truck at Crew SC games and you’ll also find Dos Hermanos serving up tacos and Schmidt’s dishing out Bahama Mama’s. In the stadium itself you can declare your allegiance with the Columbus ‘Til I Die Dog, topped with bacon, shredded potatoes, corn, cheddar and Sriracha ranch. Top things off with sweet treats from Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. Craft beer fans can now find local breweries on tap, too! Columbus Brewing Company, Land-Grant Brewing and Elevator Brewing are all represented.
